Wire: Dead Soft vs Half Hard?

I am a novice jewelry maker and am totally overwhelmed by the variety in wire selection. I am wanting to stock up on the most versatile and necessary types of wire.

And while I find the wire gauge cheat sheet helpful,(thanks Christine!) I need more guidance around dead soft vs. half hard. I haven't worked with half hard wire yet, and am hoping for some tips.

Specifically, which wire is used to make ear wires and findings?
