IMHO I would use the largest thickness you can for the beads you are using. Bracelets tend to get more wear and tear then other pieces of jewelry, because of where you wear them.

I usually glue the knot I make in the cord into a bead on the bracelet for more security also.

Another alternative is to add a crimp. After tying the knots, add a drop of glue. Once it is dry, crimp & trim.

I use the regular method as well. It usually depends on the weight of beads I am working with. Flexibility is the key, so go with what is best for you.
