stabilize large flat pieces that want to turn over?

I have tried to place a 2" elongaged decorative flat metal piece on each side of a chain so that they lay against the chest vertically. The chain is interrupted where the metal pieces are inserted. Unfortunately, these keep turning on me, and the backside is not decorated as is the front. Any suggestions for stabilizing same?
