Ready-to-Wear Chain or Cut the Chain Myself?

by Marie

I'm new to jewelry making and am wondering is it better to use ready to wear chains or cut the chains myself and add the jump rings and clasp?

My first priority is quality, second is reasonable price.

Thank you!

Ready-to-Wear Chain vs. Hand Cut Chain
by: Christine

If you can get good quality chain already finished you might want to go with that.

I would look for security as the most important factor. You want to look for jump rings that are soldered shut.

Other factors to consider:

- Whether you can find chain that suits the pendant you made (I'm assuming you are making pendants).

- Whether you can find the right length of chain ready-made

- Whether you need to cut the chain anyway for design reasons or because you can't get the pendant to string on over the clasp.

- Chunky chain means it matters less whether the jump ring is soldered because you will use a stronger thicker jump ring.

- Whether you like soldering jump rings because you just like doing it

- Price and how many chains you need. Maybe a roll of chain will suit you better if you need a hundred chains. Then again maybe it's cheaper to buy ready made if you are adding in labor costs.

I hope I addressed your question!
