pearl necklace problems

I've made a freshwater pearl necklace using 5mm pearls, strung on to 2 or 3 strands of nylon 'fishing wire'. It doesn't hang right, as if the beads aren't heavy enough. Would thin wire be better? If so, how many strands, and can I use wire with clam shells/calottes rather than crimps?
