Newlsetter, mailing lists and promoting your website

by Diana

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions that you are providing to us.

My first question is about mailing lists and newsletters.

I do have a website. Honestly though I have NOT put the time into that I should.

I'm unclear on how to go about setting up mailing lists and newsletters. You need to get people to your website to sign up for either so that is the first step I assume. So how do you get people to go to your website?

Keywords? Google search? Or use twitter, facebook, blogs to encourage people to sign up for your newsletter?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

How to Get People to Visit Your Website
by: Christine Gierer

I'm rereading your question, and I think I misunderstood the real question.

The real question was how to you get visitors, correct?

Twitter and Facebook are not really the best ways to get visitors longterm. Why? You need to constantly be there to encourage visitors to visit. Unless you want to spend your life networking, this is a poor use of time in my opinion. Now I'm sure a lot of people would disagree.

I like to get visitors by creating great content, get inbound links, and get top rankings in search engine results for my keyword terms. This works even when I'm not there drumming up interest. It also means that my traffic increases all the time with the same work I did the once.

The best way to learn how to do this kind of marketing is to use Sitebuildit! or to take my jewelry maker specific business building course available on my other website.

Good luck!

Newsletters, Mailing Lists, and Promoting your Website
by: Christine Gierer

There are lots of ways to promote a website but essentially there are two main ways:

Free and Paid.

Free mostly means search engine marketing (onsite optimizing with keyword focused webpages, and offsite through link-building strategies) and word of mouth which usually starts building just by giving people great content.

Building an affiliate program works too. This refers to giving people commission if they send people to your website and their visitor purchases from you. This usually means having products that are proven sellers though.

Paid includes print advertising and pay-per-click advertising.

If you aren't getting visitors, that should be your first priority. When you get 30 visitors a day or so you should look into getting people to sign up for a newsletter by offering them an incentive for doing so. The best place to begin is with an autoresponder service.

I use Aweber because they are very good at deliverability. Getting emails delivered is a huge problem. If people start hitting the spam button instead of delete you can quickly get put onto a blacklist so be sure to go with a company that prioritizes deliverability and works with AOL, Google, MSN, Yahoo and the ISPs to make sure emails get through.

Aweber gives you everything you need to write newsletters, build mailing lists, and has a simple tool for building pretty forms to capture email addresses.
