Most Versatile Wire To Purchase For Wire Wrapping?

by Kim
(Johnson City, TN)

There are so many different types and sizes of wires to choose from.

If I'm purchasing only 1 or 2 types of wire, which one would you recommend? What is the most versatile wire to purchase?

I like to wire wrap stones for pendants and rings.

Half-Hard Wire For Pendants
by: DeLane

I use half-hard wire almost exclusively.

It holds its shape better as you are working with it, but is flexible enough to do wire weaving, too.

Don't forget, you need to decide if you are going to use square, half-round or round wire for your designs. Round works best when using beads, but I find that square makes better pendants, bracelets, and earrings. Use half-round for bindings. It is smoother and prettier.

Best Gauge Wire
by: skye

Hi Kim,

I would go with 20g soft wire for pendents and 18g soft for rings.

If you're making your own findings like claps or links go with 16g soft. The reason I say to use soft is because the wire work you'll be doing will work harden your wire as you make your jewelry.

You can also use a rock tumbler with stainless steel jewelry shot to tumble your pieces.

Hope this helps!
