How to connect knotted stand of pearls with little string left on end to an applique or to a clasp

Hello,

I have and old knotted strand of pearls I am trying to salvage. It's very long so I'm going to have to cut it - but problem is, it will leave very little string on end to connect to anything - and I would like to connect one side to an appliqué and the other to a clasp. How to proceed?

If the necklace can stand to have two pearls removed, I would cut it, gently un-knot two of the pearls on the end and use that extra string for the clasp. Then you can use the two extra pearls for earrings or add to a bracelet.
